    Welcome Ray Schachle to OYJ.

  • 18 Jul 2017 4:14 PM | Anonymous member

On July 12, we had our monthly meeting at Dale and Carrie's house  (in their back garden, actually!)  Thirteen members were in attendance.

    1.  Treasurer Leslie Griep provided us with a detailed club income statement for the first half of 2017.  Leslie broke our revenue and our expenses down into various categories, which was very informative.  So far, our income total is $3,325., and our expenses were $3,707.  Our balance as of 6/30/17 was $4,083.00.

President Fred brought up the point that with this detailed information, we have the ability to make informed financial decisions, rather than just guess.  Thanks, Leslie!

    2.  Membership- Dale Harrington informed us that we have 117 paying members this year.  He also created a list of members who chose not to renew in 2015 (12 people), 2016 (34 people), and this year (26 people).

Also, his list shows how many active members we had in 2015 (72 members), 2016 (112 members), and this year (120 members).

We talked a bit about our new category for "emeritus members".  These are folks who have contributed so much to the club over the years, that they have been designated as lifetime members, and are no longer required to pay the yearly $30. membership dues.

Dale is also considering sending out a survey to the people who did not renew their dues this year, to find out why.  In some cases, people may have moved, or just aren't riding any more.  But if they had other reasons for leaving the club, Dale feels that their input might be helpful to the club.

    3.  Rich Arita has also been busy; he has created an OYJ Ride Leader Guidelines sheet.  It clearly lists all the things that a Ride Leader should bring, know, and do.  For those of you who have have considered leading a ride, but weren't exactly sure about what was expected, these concise guidelines explain it all. Thanks, Rich!

    4.  Picnic Ride-  This Saturday, July 22, is our Marin Picnic Ride, which starts at beautiful Stafford Lake in Novato.  The club will pay for our parking, and of course everyone is encouraged to carpool.  Grill-master Frank W. has once again volunteered to barbecue chicken and ribs for us all- Yum!  Thanks also to Paul Meola for reserving our spot at the lake again this year.

    5.  Len Nathan and Paul M. spoke briefly about our end-of-season ride to Santa Cruz in September.  Please be sure to sign up soon, if you are planning to do this beautiful and fun ride.  We talked about having a "light" route, which would start from Pescadero.  We need to figure out where would be the best spot for light riders to park their cars overnight.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Laurie Nielsen

Starting with June 2017, the club will announce new members who have joined the club each month.

    June 2017

    1) Luz Marina Ruiz

    2) Jacquelyn Stinson

    Please welcome our new riders.

At the club meeting on July 12th, we approved a new membership type (Emeritus).  Emeritus members are long time club members who contributed to the club's activities and are no longer riding with the club on a regular basis.   Members in this category will be permanent members who do not have to pay dues.  Three persons have been approved for this category: Kathy Starkey, Ron Starkey, and Al Joseph.  You can propose other members for this membership type at any membership meeting.

Oakland Yellowjackets April Meeting Minutes 2017

8 people in attendance, meeting at Rich Arita’s house

    1. Kickoff Ride (4/15/17)- we discussed last-minute details regarding the Kickoff Ride, including the need

for several detours on the ride back to the Lake, due to road closures.

    2. Start times- According to a survey we did a few years back, the opinion of club members is split

almost evenly as to whether to start the regular season rides at 8:00 am or 9:00am. Obviously, there

are valid reasons on both sides of this perennial controversy!

After some discussion, the decision wasto keep the start times as they were last season- 8:00 am for

Lake rides, consult Ride Calendar for BART and away rides.

    3. Santa Cruz Ride- Our Santa Cruz ride will take place on September 23 and 24 this year. Route details

are still being worked out. Like last year, we will have a catered dinner at the Monterey Bay Marine

Sanctuary Center, located near the Municipal Pier. The exact cost per rider is also not yet finalized, but

it is estimated that it will be about $50.

Like last year, riders will be responsible for obtaining their own lodging, so it’s not too early to book a

    motel reservation.

    4. As we begin our 2017 Season, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for new

riders. Rich Arita has created a ride leader sign-up spreadsheet; please contact him if you are interested

in leading or sweeping either a Light or Humane level ride.

At the beginning of the rides, we as a club will ask if there are any new riders present, and help them

decide which ride level would be best for them. We will introduce them to the ride leader(s) for that

We will also attempt to identify the Light riders, introduce them to the ride leader(s), and answer any

    questions they might have.

    5. Treasurer’s report- Leslie says that as of 3/31/17, the club has $3,532. In the bank, plus $634 from

PayPal, for a total balance of $4,166.

Oakland Yellowjackets March Meeting Minutes                                                3/15/2017

10 people in attendance plus three representatives from Ride for a Reason

    1.  Ride for a Reason-  This fully supported ride from Oakland to Sacramento is now in its 9th year.  This year’s ride will be on April 29.  Proceeds will go to help seven Oakland public schools pay for enrichment programs such as art and music classes.  Ride options include 120, 109, and 68 mile rides.

There will be a rally in Sacramento in support of public education, and bus rides will be provided to bring cyclists and their bikes back to Oakland.

Registration is $90. until April 01, when the cost goes up to $120.  They are also looking for people who are interested in volunteering as SAG drivers or as rest stop workers.  For more info., go to

Our club has donated money to this event in the past, and we plan to do so again this year.  The amount we will donate was not decided upon.

    2.  Kickoff Ride-  The 2017 Kickoff Ride will be held on April 15.  Our route will be the traditional leisurely ride to Alameda and back, with a picnic at Lake Merritt after the ride.  Thanks to Len and Craig for once again volunteering to be in charge of the rest stop and snacks at the Alameda turn-around point.  Fred will ask president emeritus Al Joseph if he would like to be in charge of the registration table at the Lake.

We discussed ways to publicize this event:

Robin will make up flyers that we can distribute to local bike shops.                                                                                             We can inform other bike groups such as East Bay Bike Coalition and WOBO about our ride.                     We can post the event on social websites such as Next Door and craigslist.                                                       We can publicize the ride on KQED Radio and in East Bay Express.

    3.  2017 Ride Schedule-  Thanks to Dan for putting together our ride schedule.  It will be posted soon on the OYJ website.  The severe winter weather has provided some unexpected challenges;  6 of our 31 routes currently have road closures.  We will monitor the situation and make necessary revisions if the road is still closed when the ride date is at hand.

    4.  Finances-  Our new treasurer Leslie informed us that the club has $4,800. in the bank.  We can expect that we will have closer to $6,000. after everyone pays his/her dues.

Webmaster Dale told us that of 174 members, 53 of us have paid.  Please go online to our website and pay your annual $30. dues, if you have not yet done so.

    5.  Lastly, we spent some time discussing the topic of ride leaders for the Light and Humane groups, but came to no conclusions.

Our next meeting will be on April 12, three days prior to the Kickoff Ride.  Meeting location to be determined.

Thanks to Dale and Carrie for hosting the March meeting at their home, and, along with Paul, for providing cookies.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Laurie Nielsen, secretary

    Location:  Richard Arita’s Home

    Time: 7-8:30 PM

    Meeting Minutes:

Fred called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm  In attendance were Rich Arita, Robin & Bob Shopbell, Leslie Griep, Dan Cloak, Len Nathan, Deb James, Midori Tabata, Dale Harrington, and Bob Fearman.

    • New Treasurer is Leslie Griep taking over for Jane Middleton. There will be a few weeks transitional period for account setup, banking signature/approval, etc.  Probably to be completely transitioned into the new position in early 2017.
    • Dale to update the membership application for the upcoming year.
    • Santa Cruz end of season ride was a huge success. Planning to do it again in 2017.  Committee to be form to pick a date and announce to club early in 2017 to stimulate interests and for member to book accommodations.  We agreed to avoid any busy Santa Cruz weekend.  Participants to pay for meals and venue, as well, as lodging.  Probably select a couple hotels to recommend members book to stay.
    • Xmas party. Approximate total of 35 signed up.  Looking for  volunteers to help with set up at Fred’s parents at 2 PM on day of event, Dec 10.
    • Kick Off ride tentative set for 4/15/17, which is a week after Cinderella Ride.  Someone is checking if the Lake Merritt location need to be reserved.  We will also look to improve communication to the public to improve attendance.
    • 30th Anniversary jersey has been delivered.   35 ordered by the club and delivered, of which, 25 was ordered by members.  (10 jerseys of various sizes are available to other members)

    • Email - .  The club website uses Wildappricot application, of which only 5 administrators can send email to all members. In order for members to email to the rest of the club, OYJ is using gmail to form a group list (  However, the gmail group need members to join group or they won’t get the group emails.  About 10% of the existing members have not join.  Dale is to review the club members list to see who has not yet join the gmail group.  One of the administrator will contact them directly to ask them to join the gmail group.  The old yahoo group list is out of date and is not to be used for communication.
    • Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) is seeking members of OYJ to set up and lead a ride on January 15, 2017.  Approximately 15 miles with minimal hills.
    • Club Meeting - Discussion regarding how often to meet. In lieu of meeting monthly, there was talk about meeting quarterly and maybe having an all club meeting once a year.  A specific committee or a special event meeting could held as needed.
